Gratis Fire Department
The Gratis Fire Department has its roots in the early 20th century, having been founded in 1901. Back in its early days, it consisted of only a bucket brigade. A new fire station was inaugurated in the early 1980s, and by the early 2010s, a new Tanker and brush truck had been purchased.
West Elkton Gratis Township Fire District
The West Elkton Fire Department was formed in 1910, when the village purchased a chemical pumper. It was not until the 1950s that a proper fire station was established next to the Post Office in town. By the 1980s, a district was formed with Gratis Twp., and in 2006, a new fire station was inaugurated south of town.
Shawnee Fire District
Formed in 2024, the Shawnee Fire District was created through a merger of the Gratis Fire Department and West Elkton Gratis Township Fire District. After several years of combined operations of the 2 independent agencies, a merger made sense for the community and the responders alike, saving on duplicate costs and duplication of effort for all parties involved.
