Serving the Communities of Gratis, Gratis Township, & West Elkton with Pride!

The Shawnee Fire District, formed in 2024, proudly serves the communities of Gratis, West Elkton, and Gratis Township from two stations located in Gratis and West Elkton. Covering approximately 37 square miles and protecting nearly 5,000 residents, the district operates with a dedicated roster of about 50 volunteer members. Governed by a five-member Board of Directors—including one representative each from the Gratis Village Council, West Elkton Village Council, Gratis Township Trustees, one member from the Fire District, and one member at large—the district ensures balanced community oversight and leadership. The department maintains a fleet of eight frontline apparatus, along with a Chief’s vehicle, a Mass Casualty Trailer, and a Command Trailer, providing comprehensive emergency response capabilities to meet the needs of the communities it serves.
It doesn't matter if you live in Gratis Twp., and it doesn't matter if you are already a Firefighter or not; if you are interested in joining the Fire District, contact us today and speak to one of our members about the process. Cool T-Shirt Included!

The Shawnee Fire District is supported in part by the Gratis Firefighters Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization run by and dedicated to supporting the members of the Shawnee Fire District as well as public safety efforts at large. As an all-volunteer organization focused on making our communities safer, GFA works tirelessly to organize fundraisers, host engaging community events, and provide in-depth training opportunities that strengthen our volunteers and enhance the services delivered to the public.
